Kelis talks about Milkshake Day, life as a chef

It’s flattering apparent since Kelis is the ideal luminary orator for Tuesday’s National Chocolate Milkshake Day: “When people see milkshakes, they consider of me and the song,” she told CBS News. 

The thespian teamed up with Bailey’s to create a recipe for the occasion, but the strain “Milkshake” is not the only thing that creates Kelis singly competent for the job. Kelis is also a cook who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu after she split ways with her record tag in 2007.

“It was the first time in my life that we could take that kind of time off from music,” she said. “I had a good time. It’s good since your brain can learn new things and be lighted by something new. It’s a good feeling.”

Kelis, whose mom is also a chef, has continued to order her career between food and music. She wrote a cookbook called “My Life on a Plate” in 2015.

“My mom is a chef, so we grew up around food my whole life and it’s a source of complacency for me,” she said. “Being in the kitchen and all of the courtesy to fact — we adore it, so it was kind of a healthy segue for me.”

Kelis even non-stop a pop-up grill in London last year.

“I desired it,” she said. “It was such a good experience. we consider it’s opposite than having a grill full-time. A pop-up is like being on tour. You have to make it work right now, becuase you don’t have time to labour and change. So possibly it’s going to be great, or it’s not, so there’s an fad about that that we really enjoyed.”

The musician still sings and pronounced she’s happy to see that “Milkshake,” expelled in 2003, is still in complicated revolution — quite on screen in TV and movies.

“When we were essay and recording the song, we knew it was going to be something that would hang out, some-more for the fact that it was so musically opposite from what everybody else was doing at the time,” she explained. “It’s good to see now that we were right.”

Kelis says she’s operative on new products for her salsa company and pronounced of her bustling schedule, “You always make time for the things you wish to do. There have been many occasions where we was doing full-on cooking service and getting on theatre at 11 at night.”

She added, “When you wish to do something, you make it work. You have very prolonged days and even longer nights, but that’s partial of my life.”

Kelis shared her recipe for “My Milkshake.”


3 oz Baileys Original Irish Cream Liqueur
8 oz Ginger Beer
4 scoops Chocolate Ice Cream
5 pieces Candied Ginger
1/2 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
Chili Cinnamon Sugar brew (1:1:1 ratio)
Ginger Infused Whipped Cream for Garnish


  1. Combine Baileys, ginger beer, chocolate ice cream, candied ginger and cayenne peppers in a blender with a crater of ice. Blend until smooth. 
  2. Pour reduction into potion rimmed with chili-cinnamon-sugar.
  3. Top with ginger-infused churned cream and a piece of candied ginger. 
  4. Check the yard.
