IU urges K-pop idols to 'take caring of themselves first' after Jonghyun's death

IU urged idols to take caring of their mental health in the arise of Jonghyun’s death during her acceptance debate at the Golden Disc Awards.

The 24-year-old was celebrated with the Digital Daesang endowment – fundamentally the Song of the Year – for her hit Through The Night, being selected from 11 winners of the night’s Bonsang awards including BTS, BIGBANG, BLACKPINK and Twice.

And in her acceptance speech, IU spoke of her unhappiness at losing ‘precious’ crony Jonghyun, who took his own life at the age of 27 last month.

IU, genuine name Lee Ji-eun, said: ‘To be honest, I’m still very sad. we sent off someone that was changed to me as a person, as a crony and as an artist to a very distant divided place.

‘I consider we partly know because he was in such pain and suffered so much, it’s not an tension that I’m totally unknown with.

‘I’m still very unhappy and we feel apologetic to him. I’m certain I’m not the only one feeling this sadness. But we’re people whose daily lives are so bustling and we have to devise for the next month, next year.’

IU continued: ‘It’s unhappy and frustrating that the reality will not concede us to dwell in that unhappiness for as prolonged as we want. Cheering when you’re happy, great when you’re sad, being diseased when you’re sick and not being at your best when you’re sick…I wish these healthy things can be voiced but regard by artists and those who see them [in this condition] don’t consider much of it either.

‘Artists are people who are ostensible to console others and we get they are professionals, but we wish they will take caring of themselves first as they are people too and console themselves so they don’t get sick and harm while they are trying to censor these things. we truly, unequivocally wish this doesn’t happen.’

She concluded: ‘I’m certain everybody is bustling currently and they have things to do tomorrow but we wish that all those who have won currently can enjoy and applaud currently before they get a good night’s nap and that is what we will do as well.’

In her first solo debate back in 2012, IU covered the SHINee strain Juliette, and was close to Jonghyun.

The thespian and actress’s many new manuscript Palette was a outrageous success and saw her named the many renouned K-pop artist of 2017 by Gallup Korea.

The Golden Disc Awards also saw BTS, BIGBANG, Wanna One and Suran take home awards. The second night, which will concentration on earthy releases as against to digital, will take place on 11 Jan at the KINTEX Center.
