Detroit deadlock ends with gunman dead, 3 women killed

A 14-hour deadlock with a Detroit gunman finished Monday after he killed himself following the deadly shootings of 3 women and the wounding of 3 officers.

Police used a robot to enter a home in Detroit’s easterly side where they found the gunman, 49-year-old Lance Smith, passed from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He also killed his girlfriend, Michigan State Police said.

The deadlock began after two women were fatally shot during an apparent evidence Sunday night.

Three officers — two from the Detroit Police Department and an off-duty officer from the Detroit Public Schools Police Department — were bleeding during the standoff. They are approaching to recover.

Detroit Deputy Police Chief Elvin Barren pronounced the two women killed were associated to Smith’s girlfriend. They went to the home to support her during a domestic situation, Barren said.

“The think has done statements he would not go down but a fight,” Detroit Police Assistant Chief Arnold Williams told reporters.

Earlier, police pronounced the think barricaded himself inside the home and remarkable he was “suffering from a mental illness,” citing people who know him.

Authorities haven’t expelled the names of the victims and police officers. A ground for the sharpened was unknown.
