A closer demeanour at ‘3.67m-year-old’ skeleton

It took 20 years to excavate, purify and put together Little Foot, whose skeleton was found in caves north of Johannesburg.

Its accurate age is debated, but South African scientists contend the stays are 3.67 million years old.

This would meant Little Foot was alive about 500,000 years before Lucy, the famous skeleton of an ancient human relations found in Ethiopia.

Andrew Harding reports.
